I´m currently in Venezuela presenting various workshops on Orisa/Orisha and offering spiritual services. This is my third trip to Venezuela and what I have been experiencing has been incredible. There is a huge Orisa community in many different states. And it is no surprise to frequently during the day see folks with various ileke of orisa, especially ide Ifa. And there has been a strong interest in the education of our priests and layperson alike. In fact, I have noticed a fast growing community of folks interested in the indigenous yoruba form of Orisa tradition, in addition to the afro-cuban and brazilian forms of yoruba spirituality.
What is most impressionable is that I have experienced more unity and community building and interest in education here in Venezuela than in the US where I live. I have to admit that it is disappointing and saddening to me that in the country that I live, with such a huge population of orisa folks, I have to go to another country for me to see more interest in indigenous yoruba forms of orisa worship and in the deeper education of our community.
