I was taught that Bon Dye created twins who created the world. Their names Maru, the feminine moon, (who loves watches over and gives to her children) and Lisa, the male sun (who protects, punishes and provides for his children). They are said to be completly night and day (it goes without saying no pun at all).
While creating the world they created the great Damballah Wedo. He was used as a tool to support the earth and help in creating the way it looks. He is the snake who is wrapped around the world that I deff service in my work with the misterios and being lonely they created Aida Wedo to accompany him. (Damballah actually is very important in my service) and is basically the oldest lwa period.
After they created the world and was satisified their feces gave birth to other lwa and they each play a role in how the world is today. It is to be noted that the services to these two dieties (I don’t consider them lwa as they were the creators of the lwa) are EXTREMLY SECRET and most people will never have to service or know them for that matter (which I’m guessing is why it was taken out of the religion or discontinued in certain houses). This is a very condensed version of a long story.
I was also taught the Adam and Eve story and, the more comon, creation story. I think they basically say the same thing and the actual truth lies between them all. I’ve actually sat down with my science teacher who thinks its amazing how metephorically close Vodou’s creation story is with the scientific creation story.
I have on the other hand met practicioners who do not believe in a creation at all.
